Low-Cost Fare Competition: What’s Best?

Within the past two weeks, low-cost carriers have been going nuts with sales. JetBlue started off with the $39 one-way fare sale, Southwest has their “Wanna-get-away” sale going on now, and now Virgin America has their “GO!” sale. Simply put, all three airlines are in a fight for passengers. Specifically, I think of the state of California. It’s no shocker that Southwest and JetBlue are not too thrilled with Virgin America entering their low-cost-California territory. As for now, it’s low-cost carrier fare sales, benefiting the consumer the most.

Things in the Sky’s Dan Webb provided this quotation:

“At JetBlue we recognize it takes more than mood lighting to create a comfortable flight experience, and that’s why our successful formula offers award-winning service and free amenities, including a free first checked bag and the most live entertainment in the U.S,” said Robin Hayes, executive vice president and chief commercial officer for JetBlue Airways.

Southwest is advertising their Wanna-Get-Away fare sale, with fares starting at $49-99 a way. However, don’t let the $49 fare deal fool you – most of the flights are $99. There is a 14-day advance purchase required. Travel is valid every day except Friday and Sunday. Many of the Virgin America routes are covered in the $49 rate, matching Virgin America’s GO! sale. However I think Southwest started their sale first.

And finally Virgin America:

Go fly like the parsimonious penny-pincher you are. Sure, you like to save money but that doesn’t have to mean flying with any less style. You’ve got standards. You simultaneously have your cake and eat it too. Thus, our Go! fare sale. But be sure to book soon and fly with all the amenities you could want—all at a radically low fare.

Fares start at $109  a way for: Boston-San Francisco, Boston-Los Angeles, Washington Dulles-San Francisco, Washington Dulles-Los Angeles. And they’re also offering $49 a way for San Franciso to: San Diego, Seattle, Las Vegas, Los Angeles.
