Cambodia Angkor Air, the new national airline of Cambodia, finally launched after folding back in 2001. This joint venture, between the Cambodian government and Vietnam Airways, is expected to help the tourism market. The Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, requested that the airline compete vigorously with other carriers and “make Cambodia Angkor Air successful and ensure national revenue.” – at least he did not request that it be profitable
.
Fortunately for the government, they will not be responsible for any loss or debt that the new carrier may incur. Royal Air Cambodge, had losses of $30 million before it finally shut-down in 2001. The new airline reportedly has capitalization of up to $100 million.
Cambodia expects to attract 3 million tourists annually by 2010.
